Treatment of Pain?
Aims of Treatment
These vary depending on the type of patient, type of pain and other related factors:
  • Pain relief – a reduction of 50%
  • Increased function
  • Better sleep
  • Better mood
  • A return to normality
  • An opportunity to achieve a ‘pain free window’ to allow for a change in habits: these changes can then facilitate better lifestyle choices, which reduce the chances of a recurrence of the syndrome causing the pain.
  • An understanding of why the pain is there and what is causing it
  • An opportunity to talk about the pain and develop strategies to deal with it
Pain can be treated in five ways: (click each one for more information)
A number of good patient information leaflets can be found on the Royal College of Anaesthetists faculty of pain medicine website.
